Arduino Workshop - Day 1


The first day of our 10-day Arduino workshop went over as an introduction to electronics and the Arduino. To view our lecture slides from the day (in .ppt format), click on the provided links.

We began by reviewing Ohm's Law (for those of us who haven't had a physics class since high school) and some basic terminology that we will be using throughout the course.

Basics of Electronics

We viewed a few examples on Youtube of projects that people have built with Arduino. We then broke for coffee. Ah, coffee.

Slightly more focussed, and with a bit more intensity, we then plunged into the practices of electronics. We applied Ohm's Law to reading the connections on a breadboard. We learned how to calculate the resistance of a resistor according to a color code.

Then we went out for hummus. Ah, hummus.

Upon our return, we began playing with our new breadboards, cables, resistors, LED's, switches, potentiometers, and multimeters. We learned exactly when to take measurements of resistance and voltage on a multimeter (a lesson that cost us a dear five new LED's, collectively).

The remainder of the afternoon was spent on an overview of schematic diagrams and their conventional symbols.
